Sammie Stuart flew solo today through the lanes of Essex and brought home the Combativity Award for the stage, making it two out of two for CAMS-Basso.
Stuart saw her chance to attack after the intermediate sprints were over and gained over a minute on the peloton. It’s hard to believe it’s only Stuart’s second day of racing with the team, as well as this being her first ever Women’s World Tour race. She’s gelled really well with the rest of the team and is riding with confidence in the bunch. So much confidence that after the second intermediate sprint she made a solo move that saw her gain up to a 1.20 advantage over the peloton.
“I didn’t expect it to pan out like that really,” said Stuart. “I’m super happy winning that award today. It was hot out there, so it was very hard, but I still enjoyed it. With Danni taking this award yesterday and me today, I feel like we’ve put CAMS-Basso up there with the rest of the teams in the race.”
“You can see the riders growing in confidence with each stage,” said Dani Christmas, DS. “They’re gelling well as a team and they’ve proved already they aren’t afraid to really get stuck in.”
Danni Shrosbree and Beth Morrow finished in the main bunch and are 29th and 39th on GC respectively.
The race moves on to Gloucestershire tomorrow where there are some category 2 climbs on the menu.
