CAMS-Basso were back in action again at UCI race, Bloeizone Fryslan Tour, in the Friesland region of the Netherlands. The team kicked off with great results in the ITT, Becky was our top placed rider in 16th, just 1:13 down on the World TT Champion, which put them in 8th position in the team standings ahead of two road stages.
With two flat stages and very little wind, positioning was going to be key during both road stages of the race. With a mix of youth and experience in the team there was a lot to learn.
Team manager, Simon Howes reflects on the race, “I’m delighted with the team’s performance. We took a young team with us and they are learning so much, gaining experience each time they race. For some like Beth, it was their first European race, and many were racing in the Netherlands for the first time. Speaking from experience, racing there is some of the scariest racing you’ll ever do, with all the road furniture, narrow roads, lots of twists and turns. If you can race there, it will stand you in good stead for all racing.”
One of the riders in their first international race for the team was Beth Morrow. She wasn’t afraid to get stuck in. The gains in confidence and positioning in the bunch were clear on day two.
“I really enjoyed my first race with the team this season,” comments Morrow. “The bunch was definitely much more hectic than we are used to in the UK. However, once I got used to it I really enjoyed the race. The constant movement within the bunch forces you to stay alert and constantly be trying to move up. It was a really fantastic experience and one in which I hope to improve upon throughout the rest of the season!”
World Champion Ellen van Dijk (Trek-Segafredo) won the overall title of Bloeizone Fryslan Tour on Saturday after holding the GC lead from the opening day with her time trial win.
